Papilio rutulus rutulus pupa
In the spring, after tiger swallowtail pupae have gone through the winter, it is sometimes difficult to visibly notice when a pupa has broken hibernation (diapause) and has taken it first steps to start to develop into an adult butterfly. When held up to the light, you can see the darkening of the eyes on the chrysalis indicating that the pupa is starting to develop into an adult tiger swallowtail butterfly.
