Finding Eggs in the Field > Eggs on Flower Buds
Females of the pierid genus Euchloe prefer to oviposit on flower buds.
-
Euchloe ausonides coloradensis Ovum
Egg was laid on Dyar's Woad (Isatis tinctoria).
-
Euphilotes ancilla Ovum
Female rocky mountain dotted blues prefer to oviposit on blooms of the buckwheats Eriogonum heracleoides and Eriogonum umbellatum when the flowers are open and the pedals exposed such as shown in this photo. This is critical when getting eggs out of females. Make sure that there blooms of buckwheat where the flower pedals are open. (Special thanks to John Emmel for the heads up on this technique.)
