Females of some butterflies oviposit on or near unopened leaf buds or stems on trees. Many of these eggs overwinter in that stage.

Colorado hairstreak females tuck their eggs near buds and stems of scrub oak (Quercus gambellii). This butterfly overwinters as eggs and hatch the next spring when the oak tree leafs out.

It's not too difficult to find these eggs in late fall or late winter just before or right after snowpack makes traversing the habitat difficult. It's always helpful to search 10-15 feet high scrub oakds in areas where the butterfly flew thick the previous summer.
